Your Clothing Style

Have You Defined Your Clothing Style?

People often judge us by the clothing we wear - Wardrobe Design"People do judge a book by its cover" ~ John T. Malloy

You can relate to that. You've gone into a bookstore looking for a book or a magazine, and if the cover isn't interesting, you more than likely move on to something else.

The unfortunate thing is that it might have been a really great book, but you may never know.

Whether we like it or not, whether it's right or wrong, that's the way it is. We are the book, and our clothing is obviously our cover. Do people we meet take one look at our cover and decide they're not interested and move onto someone else?

This happens all the time, especially in the business world. Your clothing is a reflection of you, so...who are you?

Once you answer that question you're well on your way to defining your clothing style.

What defines you?

  • One of the first things to consider is your body type, taking that into consideration will enable you to dress size appropriately.
    • Are you short or tall?
      • Short men should avoid wearing pants with cuffs
    • Are you thin or not?
  • Consider the type of work you do or are looking for. (Dress like you already have the job)
    • Corporate jobs require professional wardrobes - Wardrobe DesignDo you work in the corporate world?
      • Professionals need to wear business appropriate clothing, casual will not do.
    • Are you in management?
      • Your wardrobe needs to encourage respect.
    • Do you work in a casual work environment?
      • Suits are definitely unnecessary.
    • Are you an outside salesman?
      • One very successful salesman always had the ethic to dress in a similar fashion to the clients he was calling on, never over dress and never under dress. Your client will feel much more comfortable.

The next step is to build a wardrobe for your style.

Your wardrobe can be a big investment, so you definitely want to do it right.

If you're a young professional just getting started, you may need to take it slow and build a little at a time, making sure that you buy quality clothing that is appropriate to your defined style.

If you're a seasoned executive, you may only need to add to your wardrobe and update it a little. Buying clothes that are classic in style will last fashion wise a lot longer than trendy clothing.

Whatever stage of life you're in, a sure way to build or add to your wardrobe is to use the services of a men's clothier or fashion consultant.

In 1995, I purchased my first suit from Bill. It is a double breasted gray pinstripe.I still wear it and it still looks new.Everything that I have acquired over the years from Bill, be it a suit, sports coat, shirts, or shoes, has been top quality and the service equally first rate. I've sent friends and professional associates to Bill and they report similar experiences to my own.
