Sport Coat

When is the Right Time to Wear a Sport Coat?

Sport Coats had their origins at the Fox Hunt - Wardrobe DesignTaking the name sport coat literally, you would think you should only wear one during sporting events.

Believe it or not, that's actually how they came about.

Sport coats or sports jackets as they are sometimes called actually originated in Europe, more specifically the British Isles during the time that hunting was a favorite sport among the aristocrats.

These jackets were designed of rugged cloth, made to protect its wearer from weather, thorns and briars.

They were also designed to carry the items necessary for the hunt such as bullets, powder and duck calls.

Later, after World War I, the jacket was modified as a more casual kind of coat worn by young English gentlemen from colleges such as Oxford.

As a way of dressing casually, they wore the jacket to clubs around town creating a feeling of the wealthy sportsman.

Americans started wearing these sport coats in some colleges  during the 1920's to mimic the look of the English.

Is there a difference between a suit coat and a sport coat?

A suit coat is intended to be worn with matching suit pants.

The fabric is usually of a higher quality than a sport coat and is also more fitted.

A suit is more formal and typically worn at the office for business or business formal functions.

A sport coat is more casual.

It is typically worn with dress slacks and can be worn with or without a tie.

If the occasion you are attending is formal, a sport coat is not appropriate.

Sport Coat Options

Being the casual garment that they are, sport coats can still have that same sporting feel as they originally did.

They may have:
